Perceptions for January 2011
Diary of a Bible
(The following was written by Bascom Allen and shared with the Edgewood church of Christ by Louis Francis at our Wednesday
devotional on Dec. 8, 2010. I thought it would be appropriate for our first article in the new year 2011 with the hope that you will be stirred to
regular Bible study this year. ~Roger Johnson)
Imagine for a moment that you had a Bible that could literally talk to you. What do you think your Bible would say to you? Would it be something like
this?
JANUARY:
A busy time of the year for me. Most of the family decided to read me through this year or at least made a new year's resolution to. They kept me busy
for the first two weeks, but for some unknown reason they seem to have forgotten me now.
FEBRUARY:
Clean-up time! I was dusted off yesterday and put in my usual place. My owner decided to use me for a few minutes last week. He got into an argument
with someone and used me to look up some references to prove that he was right.
MARCH:
Had a busy first of the month. My owner was elected president of the PTA at his children's school and
used me to help prepare the speech.
April:
Grandpa visited the family this month for a week. He kept me on his lap for an hour reading 1 Corinthians 13. (Read chapter) He seems to think more of
me than do some people in my own household.
May:
I now have a few green stains on my pages. Some spring flowers were pressed in my pages.
June:
I look like a scrapbook. My owner has stuffed me full of newspaper clippings – one of the girls was married.
July:
They put me in a suitcase today. I guess we are going on vacation. I wish I could have stayed home because I know I will be closed up in this
thing for at least two weeks. The only things that will see the light of day are the clothes I am stuffed in here with.
August:
Guess what? I am still in that suitcase.
September:
Back home at last and in my old familiar place on the end table. I have a lot of company though. Two women's magazines, a Sports Illustrated
Swimsuit edition and the TV Guide are stacked on top of me. I wish I could be read as much as they are!
October:
They read me a little today. One of them is very sick. Right now, I am sitting in the center of the coffee table away from all those
magazines. The minister must be coming by for a visit.
November:
Back in my old place again covered up on the end table.
December:
The family is busy getting ready for the holidays. I will probably get covered up under wrapping paper and packages again...just as I am
every Christmas holiday.
Hosea said it best in Hosea 4:6
"My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge..."
As children of God, how can we expect to learn and grow if we continually choose to not study the Word of God; day after day, week after week, month
after month, and year after year? As the New Year approaches, if we are blessed to see it, will we continue to make the same bad choices that we made
this year? On the other hand, will we learn from our mistakes and choose to put God first in our lives by setting aside the time to study His Word? If
your Bible could talk, what would it say to you about your study habits throughout the year?
