History of Edgewood church of Christ
World War II was still a fresh memory and only four churches of Christ (Rose Hill, Waverly Avenue and South Street in
Columbus and Broad Street in Phenix City) existed in our community when the Edgewood church began meeting in early November
1953.
The elders of the Rose Hill church – realizing that Columbus’s major expansion was then to the east and wanted to serve the spiritual needs of the area – bought land and constructed a church building at Norris Road and Norris Circle.
While the nucleus of members came from Rose Hill, Christians from several congregations joined together to form the
Norris Road church. Total membership was about 100.
To inaugurate the church, a gospel meeting was held in which the first response was a young man named Joe Haines.
Because there was a leak in the baptistery, a group drove him to the Rose Hill church building to be baptized. On the
way, J.M. Tomblin decided that he, too, wanted to obey the gospel. Thus Joe and Tommy became the new church’s
first converts.
In 1956 Heber Garrett and Jesse Brannon were chosen to serve as the church’s first elders, and soon afterward six
deacons were appointed. Both Heber and Jesse served for 25 years and are now deceased.
In March 1960 a large number of members from the Waverly Avenue congregation merged with the Norris Road congregation to form the new Edgewood church of Christ. The Norris Road building was sold and a new one was constructed at 4102 Macon Road
on property purchased from developer Owen D. Edge. Three bond issues totaling $145,000 were sold to finance the new
building. As work progressed, it was decided to tie the structure into the existing house to the west (next to Edgewood Circle) and use it for additional space (now called the annex). The first worship service was held in this newly
constructed building on December 15, 1963.
For more than forty years now the Edgewood church has remained committed to the gospel of Christ and has served this
community with distinction. It is the hope and prayer of the present eldership that, with the help of each member,
Edgewood will remain the proverbial “city set on a hill” from which the gospel of Christ will radiate throughout
our area and beyond.
