Beliefs
Thank you for viewing our web site. We hope that the material we have provided on this site will be of benefit to your
spiritual journey in life. At the Edgewood church of Christ we want to be the Lord's servants who share in his vision for
world evangelism and the salvation of souls. We accept the heavy responsibility that is involved in this challenge.
What Is Our Authority?
Good communication begins with our making sure that we clearly articulate our mission, purpose, and source of authority for
all that we teach and practice. Biblical authority is the basis of our congregational life. Peter said, "Whoever speaks, let him speak, as it were, the utterances of God" (1 Peter 4:11, NASV). The first question that should come to mind
when establishing any practice or advocating any teaching is, "What does the Scripture say?"(Romans 4:3).
How Can One Become A Christian?
Our only creed is Christ. Our sole source of authority for all that we do is God's word, the Bible, to which we are totally
committed. We are firmly dedicated to the biblical teaching of salvation by grace through faith Ephesians 2:8-10). Biblical
faith requires repentance (turning from sin - Acts 17:30), confession of faith before others (Acts 8:37; Matthew 10:32-33),
and baptism in water for the remission or forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38; 22:16). The Bible teaches that baptism is an
immersion in water (Romans 6:3-4; Colossians 2:12) and is the act of obedience that puts a person into a saved relationship
with Jesus (Galatians 3:27). Obedience to God demands that we do what God says, in the way God says it is to be done, and for the reason he says it is to be done. To do otherwise would be trying to seek salvation on our own terms and not on God's.
What Is The Church?
Jesus promised that he would build his church (Matthew 16:18). That promise was fulfilled on Pentecost as recorded in Acts
chapter two. The Lord did not establish a multiplicity of religious organizations such as exists in the world today. He
established only one spiritual body which is the church (Ephesians 4:4; 1:22-23). The Lord's church is not a division of a
larger religious body, nor is it a combination of all religious bodies. The present-day existence of a wide variety of
religious groups with teachings and practices that conflict with each other is not approved of God (John 17:20-21; 1
Corinthians 1:10)
